What wholesome entertainment is available for a Christian today? Let’s define wholesome: conducive to or promoting good health and physical or moral well being. Ask yourself a simple question. Does what I watch and read promote good moral values or is it undermining my moral beliefs, making a mockery of the Christian faith? We are inundated daily with entertainment and advertising that promotes the drug culture, violence, sex, abortion, teenage pregnancy, cohabitation, marriage, divorce and remarriage, approval of homosexual lifestyle, and the list is nauseatingly endless. Furthermore, we see the promotion of political correctness, liberal bias, environmentalism, global warming hype etc. We intend to give a sense of sanity to help discern what is wholesome, truthful and beneficial for your family. We will make recommendations we view as acceptable for the entire family. Preferences are diverse: westerns, comedy, romantic themes, action and drama. Not all movies/programs are created equal. For instance, some romantic themes are pure and wholesome, such as Jane Austin’s Sense and Sensibility or Pride and Prejudice. The Australian series, Five Mile Creek, is a delightful frontier adventure telling the story of the settling of the Aussie outback. Suitable programs are available for the diligent searcher.

Parents are responsible to screen what their families watch. What is acceptable to one family may not be to another. It is important to discern the moral principles promoted in any work and to teach children to recognize influences incompatible with Biblical standards. A good example is the documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth." The work is promoted and endorsed by public education, the mainstream media and our government even though it is biased and laden with falsehoods. We must not allow movies promoting premarital sex or homosexuality to have access to our children. If Jesus condemned immorality and the New Testament warns of the consequences of living a life of immorality, should we wink our eye at sin? This is not a lack of compassion or criticism, but a matter of loyalty to our Lord, who admonished us to judge a righteous judgement. People may shout legalism. It is not legalism, but obedience to walk in the light we have been given. Neither do we consider ourselves better than another because we choose to refrain from viewing unwholesome material, but we are striving to walk in a manner that is pleasing to our Lord.

In the past decade, availability of wholesome choices has greatly broadened with reference to what we watch. We are no longer limited to the three major networks of the liberal media. Today choices abound due to the cable networks, satellites, video, and DVD. We are no longer shut up to the debased mind set of a sin riddled group of liberals, committed to propagating immoral lifestyles. Many independent film companies are making wholesome movies and documentaries that are entertaining, educational and at the same time promote family values and Christian principles. I have personally talked with Rich Christiano, an independent Christian film maker and founder of Christiano Film Group. Mr. Christiano is affiliated with ChristianCinema.com. This organization works with hundreds of independent film makers and has gathered their projects under one roof so you can easily find the best in faith-based, family friendly movies on DVD.

Available today, we have television programing from the 50's, 60's and 70's on DVD. Television series like The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie, Daniel Boone, Cheyenne, The Ozzie and Harriet Show and more to come, are being offered. Many movies today are remakes of previous titles. Often the newer versions have liberal viewpoints and contain content not acceptable for family viewing. Two examples, Cheaper by the Dozen originally filmed in 1950 and The Flight of the Phoenix, filmed in 1965 are far superior to the new versions which depict crude humor and behavior, language and innuendo. While some things may be acceptable I still rather prefer the older versions. The opposition goes something like this: our culture, way of life, dress, and music has changed so we need to reflect contemporary mores. The problem with this position - it doesn’t endeavor to influence society for the better. Family values, portrayed by functional, normal families are neglected in favor of dysfunctional, divorced, single parent, homosexual scenarios. Why? Because the entertainment industry is liberal, given to bias and committed to promoting immoral, unwholesome lifestyles.

Amusement is an interesting word. Muse means to engage in meditation, to ponder. The Bible exhorts us to meditate on the word of God, absorb it, let it sink deep into our hearts, to muse on it, effecting change in our lives. To put an "a" in front of muse - amuse- negates the word and means to occupy the mind with entertainment and lightness, preventing thoughtful contemplation. Thus amusement can become a tool for the devil to hinder our spiritual growth. Romans 1:18 speaks of holding the truth in unrighteousness, which means to suppress the truth or to withhold, to keep from being published.

Beware of allowing entertainment to replace your family time, prayer, and study of the scripture. I fear the modern church has given itself to the entertaining of Christians with worldly music, comedic speakers and programs, forsaking the way of truth that alone can set free. Shallow, carnal Christianity is a negative testimony. Wholesome entertainment is not wrong, but too much can be a distraction to the Christian’s spiritual focus and commitment.

We highly recommend the "TV Guardian," a unique device that filters out profanity and sexually explicit language from videos, television, satellite and cable while you watch your program. A question may be raised, if one has chosen wisely, why would such a filter be necessary? Programing with a "G" or "PG" rating will sometimes contain mild language that is undesirable. Too often words referring to Deity such as "God" and "Jesus" are used in a nonreligious application. The "TV Guardian" filters out these offenses. See our link to this site for more information about the "TV Guardian."

When Cardinal Wolsey, Chancellor of England, names More as his successor, it becomes important for Henry to get More's support, but More cannot be swayed.

A Man Called Peter - DVD
By 20th Century Fox

Considered one of the finest films to deal with religion, it is also a touching love story. Richard Todd delivers a thoroughly winning performance as Peter Marshall, the Scottish-born minister who became Chaplain of the U.S. Senate. While still a boy, Peter wants only to go to sea. But as a young man he experiences a profound awakening which leaves him with the unwavering conviction that he has been called upon to do the Lord's work. He completes his religious training in the United States, where he presides over several congregations. A compelling speaker who believes religion should be fun, Marshall inspires young people to renew their interest in the church, and his ministries prosper. Eventually, he becomes pastor of the prestigious Church of the Presidents, in Washington D.C. and is asked to serve as spiritual guide for the Senate. Co-starring Jean Peters as Marshall's devoted wife, Catherine, 'A Man Called Peter' is the deeply moving tale of 'a man and his close friendship with God'. This 1955 performance of the book written by (Peter's wife) Catherine Marshall, received an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography.

Friendly Persuasion

Gary Cooper shines as a Quaker alongside a resolute and opinionated Dorothy McGuire as his "congregation elder" wife. They live in the rural "North" at the outbreak of the Civil War, raising 2 eligible teenagers (a boy and a girl), as well as a 10 year old boy. The eminent Civil War has the Quaker community divided on the issue of pacifism. Several "older men" in the congregation quickly turn coats, urging Cooper to join them in fighting the Rebels who plunder and burn Northern villages and kill women and children. When put to the true test, it is Cooper who proves to be the "true Christian".
A love story between the teenage girl and her soldier suitor is a beautiful bonus. The entire cast is excellent, and the timeless theme song by Pat Boone puts the icing on the cake. This is a 5-star classic. You'll want to watch "Friendly Persuasion" again and again.
